Chopper Update: The bumpy road to recovery

March 9, 2010

At the end of January, Chopper underwent Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy surgery, or TPLO, on both his hind legs. The surgeries were very extensive and unexpected complications impacted Chopper's recovery time. At this point, we are uncertain when Chopper will be available for adoption.

Currently, Chopper is doing very well and has an excellent prognosis. He has begun the long recovery process in the comfort of a caring foster home. We hope that Chopper will make a triumphant return to the shelter and be available for adoption soon.

In the meantime, those interested in welcoming Chopper into their family should consider the following requirements for Chopper's adoption:
  • No wood or tile flooring in the home. Carpet or non-slip flooring is important in ensuring Chopper's continued health and wellbeing.

  • No stairs. Chopper's new home must be single-story with no internal or external stairs.

  • No small children. Chopper has been through a lot and he deserves a quiet home with adults or older, more mature children.

  • Preferably the only pet in the home. While Chopper loves other dogs, over-excited play could diminish his chances at having a long and healthy life.

On behalf of Chopper, we thank you for your support and patience during his long and arduous recovery process. Just like Chopper, we are taking his recovery one day at a time.

After an appropriate recovery time has passed, adoption applications for Chopper will be available at the Humane Society. Chopper's adoption process will be more in-depth then our typical process and may include a home check and personal or veterinary references. Chopper's new family will also need to be prepared to take on the costs of future medications, care and special diet food to ensure Chopper's life-long success.
