Well, it looks like this COVID-19 virus is here to stay, in one form or another. And, until we learn more about it and find a vaccine, your team at HSSW has decided to embrace the opportunity to innovate, consider and experiment. After all, what else can we do???
We really like setting appointments for taking in lost animals and adopting animals into new families. It gives us more time to help animals adjust to the shelter. It helps people find the right match, and it brings order and balance for our team in what can be crazy, busy days.
New ideas for curbside adoption pickups and lost animal drop-offs are taking hold and streamlined online services like ReTails donation appointments and outdoor umbrellas and furniture make waiting for your adoption appointment more fun.
Along with everyone else, we are meeting on Zoom every day – team meetings, board meetings, one-on-ones, event planning and more. It’s easy to get tired of Zoom, and we’re all sharing a lot more information with each other.
Because everything is complicated and changing moment by moment, our imaginations are being tested and creativity challenged….and we are mastering the art of the pivot. It’s exhausting and exhilarating at the same time.
And, we are in awe of the constant generosity of our volunteers, donors, and the community. Because of you, we have been able to bring back nearly all our staff (41 were on stand-by layoff and 37 were on reduced hours). We have stayed open by appointment for lost dogs and adoptions. Our foster care program has doubled in size. We have continued to provide people in need with dog and cat food and litter at our shelter and through local food pantries. We still provide a Safe Haven, caring for pets when owners can’t, and HELP! is covering veterinary costs for those who are unable to pay. And soon, we will reopen our low-cost spay/neuter clinics.
Things will never be the same again. So, we’ve decided to make them better.
Stay healthy, stay safe and love your dogs and cats and kittens and puppies…and the rabbits too.
