"Every day brings a new learning and new opportunities" … I remember saying this over and over when I first came to work at HSSW. I guess everything comes around again.
The greatest challenge of the pandemic, I believe that most of us have already concluded, is not knowing… when it ends?… who has the virus?... who doesn’t?… how long do we stay home? Stay healthy? When can we re-open ReTails? When can we do spay/neuter surgeries again? When…when…when????
Here's what I know for sure. More than 200 families have offered to join our 100+ HSSW Foster Families in caring for stray dogs and cats and puppies and kittens – especially now that kitten season has officially begun. Today, more than 150 animals were tucked into foster homes with food, shelter and people who are falling in love with them.
Every day, there is a team working at the shelter to make sure that all the animals still here (only about 80-100) are getting what they need. That team includes staff and volunteers, and we are so grateful for them.
We are offering low-contact, curbside adoptions for kittens and puppies; many fosters are adopting the animals in their care; and we recently added adoptions for older dogs that include a dog-to-family meet (One member in the front Freedom Fence yard + one staff + one dog. The rest of the family is on the outside of the fence).
We are making plans so that we are ready for the changes we all hope for in the coming weeks and months. Everyone wears masks when coming to the shelter or ReTails. Setting up to make social distancing easy. Lots of hand sanitizer everywhere. Installing acrylic panels to protect our staff. Adding staff back as the rules change.
The good news. We have been building up our reserves for a rainy day for the past four years, and with the help of donors – of dollars and food – funders, and a Payroll Protection/SBA loan, we believe we will make it through the next eight months ready for 2021.
More to come… there is some great “feel good” news in this issue of WAG. Be sure to check it out.
Stay Safe. Stay Healthy
PS - We’re learning a lot and adapting to changes today and for the future. We’ve already started our Go Forward Plan. And are excited to implement it.
