The Teen Volunteer Program is an excellent way for teens to participate in their community and to gain experience for future careers. The Teen Volunteer Program is highly competitive, with space limited to approximately 30 participants each four-month service term.
All interested applicants should carefully review the program requirements below to ensure the program works with their schedules.
Open to youth 14-17 years of age. (Individuals under age 14 may apply to the program if they will turn 14 by the date of training for the service term.)
Service terms are: Spring (March-June); Summer (July-October); and Winter (November-February). Teens must commit to a minimum of 6 hours per month for a 4-month service term. At the end of each term, teens who have successfully completed program requirements, demonstrated good animal handling skills, responsibility and interest in volunteering will likely be invited to continue to the following term; however, continuation is not guaranteed.
Teen volunteer opportunities are available at two locations.

Monday - Friday: Noon - 6:00 pm Saturday - Sunday: 8:00 am - 6:00 pm
Teen volunteers who demonstrate exceptional animal handling skills and maturity may be able to advance to higher-responsibility assignments, including the shelter medical clinic. *All dog volunteers are required to purchase a pair of HSSW-approved leashes for $15.
ReTails Thrift Store: Gain retail, customer service and teamwork experience. Retail duties may include: receiving, evaluating, cleaning, sorting, pricing donations; organizing and restocking the sales floor; assisting customers. Department options include apparel, books/media, housewares, electronics, pet supplies and more. Ambitious volunteers can expand their involvement throughout the store, including caring for adoptable cats on site—cleaning, feeding, socializing and assisting with adoptions.
