  • Administrative Assistant

Administrative Assistant Volunteers provide support in a variety of areas including data entry, phones, clerical, customer service, etc. Volunteer positions are available on an as-needed basis and the hours will vary by assignment. Most qualified volunteers possess the following skills and experience: knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, attention to detail, ability to learn new skills and work with little supervision. A professional attitude, strong interpersonal skills, and confidentiality are required.

Shifts are flexible and may include work-from-home opportunities.

  • Cat and Kitten Care

Cat Care Assistants work directly with staff to ensure proper care and cleanliness of animal enclosures. Volunteers clean kennels, scrub litter boxes, wash bedding, and stock supply areas. Volunteers also assist with the maintenance and general cleaning of floors, windows, doors and other surfaces in the cat adoption ward. This is a very important position, and a great way to gain work experience in an animal shelter environment. Volunteers may also assist with laundry, grooming, cleaning, distributing toys, and providing socialization. Volunteers are physically able to handle cats of all sizes and temperaments, able to follow directions, think quickly, and work with minimal supervision.

Shifts are daily from 7:30-9:30 am and 10:00 am -12:00 pm

  • Dog Walking and Enrichment

HSSW dog walkers work as a team to make sure all adoptable dogs get outdoors twice a day for a walk and potty break. Dog Walkers are strong, have excellent balance, are able to control dogs up to 70 pounds or more on a leash, are comfortable with jumping / mouthy canines, are able to follow directions and think quickly. Dog Team Volunteers also help with laundry, cleaning toys, and sanitizing exercise yards and socialization rooms. Good eyesight, hearing, and awareness of your surroundings is essential.

Shifts are available daily from 8:00-10:00 am and 4:00-6:00 pm Weekend dog walkers are especially needed.

  • Foster Care

Foster Care Volunteers provide in-home love and care for animals who are injured, sick, recovering from surgery, or simply need a little quality time away from the shelter before finding their forever home. Foster Care volunteers are required to attend a Foster Care Orientation and, upon approval, are provided relevant training and supplies to make certain their fosters are healthy and comfortable.

  • Humane Education

Volunteers assist HSSW’s Humane Education Coordinator in working with children grades 3-8 in learning about responsible pet ownership and pet and animal safety. Qualified volunteers are able to follow directions, think quickly, possess excellent personal interaction skills including good listening and speaking, and are able to relate to a diverse audience. Volunteers are provided on-the-job training by Humane Society staff.

    Shifts vary throughout the year.

  • Laundry and Dishes

Clean bedding and dishes are essential to keeping shelter animals healthy. Volunteers who assist with laundry and dishes collect items from around the shelter, sort, load and unload washers and dryers, fold items, and restock areas throughout the shelter. Duties include the operation of a commercial sanitizer and laundry machines. Volunteers will be able to follow directions, think quickly, and work with minimal supervision. This position requires lifting, bending, standing, and walking.

Flexible shifts are available Monday through Sunday.

  • Special Events

The Humane Society’s special events offer fun and fulfilling opportunities to support the animals! Events at HSSW include pet-friendly outdoor events like Walk/Run for the Animals and Doggie Dive, as well as more traditional fundraising events like our annual Auction in the Country. You'll also find regular small-scale events like Pet Portraits with Santa and other special events.

Opportunities vary from working behind the scenes or directly with the public - whatever your special skill, talent, or interest, HSSW has a special event volunteer opportunity for you!

    Shifts vary throughout the year.
